Things My Parents Say & Do

We were playing “Categories” — the four of us — on Thursday, when Mum wrote, “River Valley” for the ‘Rivers’ category (for the record, she was joking) and “Rolls Choice” (she meant “Rolls Royce”) for the ‘Car Brands’ category.

My Mum wasn’t (and still isn’t) too big a fan of Chrome so I downloaded Mozilla Firefox for her when she told me, “I don’t know how to work this Mozzarella.” She meant ‘Mozilla’.

I was on one of my daily night walks with Dad when he commented that a woman’s large shades looked like a bicycle sitting on her nose.

I was driving home with Dad yesterday and when Gloria (1982) by Laura Branigan started playing on 90.5fm. He belted out the notes before pointing out to me the goose pimples that had appeared on his forearms. This always happens when he remembers the past. I find it so sweet and loveable. “I grew up with this song,” he said under his breath, nostalgically. 16 going on 17 from The Sound Of Music came up next on 92.4fm and I sang along to the lines I knew best…

I am 16 going on 17
I know that I’m naive
Fellows I meet may tell me I’m sweet
And willingly I believe

I am 16 going on 17 innocent as a rose
Bachelor dandies
Drinkers of brandies
What do I know of those?
